Social Activities for Men
San Mateo Branch
Each golf group plays once a week
Golf is the most popular SIR activity. It's so popular that we have two different groups -- one that plays 18 holes and a new group that plays 9 holes. Both groups are open to all levels.
18-hole group
Play is at 10 a.m., usually on Wednesdays but sometimes on a different day based upon availability. We play on a variety of courses. A weekly email in advance of each event contains all the particulars and tells you how to reserve a spot and pay.
9-hole group
This group usually plays on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. though times may vary. A weekly email has all the details.
The Pickleball group plays on Monday and Thursday mornings at 9 a.m. We play "drop-in" pickleball, meaning that you don't need to bring a partner.
Just show up and you'll be playing in no time. There are usually other people at all levels playing at the same time, which ensures lots of variety in the matches.
The group meets for league bowling every week at 10:00 am on Thursdays and Fridays at Bel-Mateo Bowl in San Mateo. This activity is run jointly with Branch 142.
Cribbage - Thursdays, 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Hearts - Fridays, 12:30 - 2:30 pm
Affectionately called “Italian lawn bowling,” the sport of bocce has been around in one form or another since ancient times. Unlike other ball sports, bocce is unique in that it is both calming and competitive, making it an obvious choice for active adults interested in low-stakes fun.
We play every Friday at Beresford Park from 10am - 12pm
Just show up ready to play!
The group meets every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the San Mateo Central Park Tennis Courts.
All members of SIR are welcome to participate. This is a great way to get one’s exercise and also enjoy the sport.
Just show up ready to play.
The Genealogy Group meets via Zoom on the 2nd Wednesday of the month (after Branch One's monthly luncheon) at 3 p.m.
The group discusses various aspects of Genealogy, computer programs for Genealogy, and various sources for obtaining information on one’s ancestors. It also discusses how the computer is useful in storing genealogical information.
The book group meets every two weeks.
We alternating between a discussion of the book selected by a member, which all members read, and an open discussion of book-related and other topics of interest to group’s members.
Open discussion are currently being held by Zoom teleconferencing, book discussions are generally hosted by one of the group members.
The Stock Study Group is currently meeting on the second Monday of every month at the San Mateo Senior Center at 10:00 a.m.
The group discusses various aspects of the Stock Market, what the trend of the market seems to be, and any other related matters.
The purpose of the group is to improve members’ knowledge of the stock market and of individual stocks through interactive discussion and active participation.
